Materials:

  • Pinto Beans
  • Large Stones
  • Ping Pong Balls
  • Large Flat Bowl

Procedure:

  1. Take the large flat bowl and place the ping-pong balls at the bottom.
  2. Pour the pinto beans into the pan.
  3. Place the stones on top of the pinto beans.
  4. Shake the pan side to side.
  5. The stones should fall to the bottom while the ping pong balls rise to the top.

Explanation:

Particles that are dense tend to fall through lighter particles. Lighter particles rise to the top. The heavy stones represent dense particles and the ping-pong ball represents less dense particles, which rise to the top.
