Energy in Motion - The IPSD: March 14th, 2002

Before presenting to the public, the students got to experience MORE EXPERIMENTS!!!!The culmination of the International Public Science day took place at the Museum of Science and History. After enjoying a fun science presentation by MOSH educators, students had a chance to present what they had learned.

Students built a timeline for the publicFirst was a timeline depicting types of transportation through history. Pictures were chosen by the students who then placed the vehicle on the space that corresponded to when the mode of transportation was invented. Not only was this discussed but the type of fuel needed to operate the mode was covered. Students were able to connect energy sources and how they have been used in history and for how long.

A close-up look at the Maglev TrainThe first presentation was on Maglev Trains, a source of transportation using an alternative energy source. Students explained the science behind the theory and a little history of the concept. A model of how a Maglev Train was made to better illustrate how this concept will work.

K'NEX Cars powered by Rubber BandsThe second presentation used K'NEX and rubber bands to illustrate potential and kinetic energy. Students made vehicles that successfully demonstrated the difference between kinetic and potential energy.

Steam Powered Jet Boat heating up!Concluding the presentations was on Steam Powered Rocket Boats. The miniature boats were made of cigar tubes, water inside the tubes, a small boat, and a flame. The cigar tubes, filled with water, were heated. This emitted steam, which pushed the boat forward through the water. In this presentation students discussed steam power which is another alternative energy source to nonrenewable resources.

The experience was a positive one for students, teachers, and MOSH educators. Not only was science fun and empowering, but concepts about energy were discussed, retained and sparked interest in science. We would certainly love to continue the project in the years to come.
