The first visit to Rufus Payne focused on these topics: Energy can be transferred to one type of energy to another with varying degrees of efficiencies; Energy is defined as the ability to do work;
Different types of energy are heat, light, radiation, chemical, mechanical, and electrical. All of these topics were put into a kid-friendly lesson, which utilized tools possessed by the museum. Tools such as a tesla coil, which emits electricity into the air, demonstrated that energy transfer. A radiometer was used to illustrate mechanical energy.
Using thionen students were able to see a change in color is caused by a chemical reaction triggered by a light source.
Students also discussed different sources of energy such as solar energy.
Students were asked to create a journal listing different types of energy, the types of energy that were transferred in this lesson, and to draw a picture of one of those types of energy.
