Do It Yourself: The Projects: Steam Powered Rocket Boats

Research

Steam Powered Rocket Boats and informative boardThis project used the idea of steam as an alternative source of energy. Steam can be used to effectively power such vehicles as boats. The objective: Students will understand the interaction of matter and energy by observing water(matter) transform into steam(a gas) promoted by the application of heat energy.

Steamboats have a rich history dating back many years. Be it transportation, defense, or cruising steamboats are an efficient way of transportation.

Project Description:

A close-up of the boatsStudents made a model steamboat by using a cigar tube, a small boat, food warmer candles, paperclips, and water. The cigar tube contained water and was harnessed above the boat. A candle or two are placed under the tube and then lit. The lit candle heats up the cigar tube, which emits steam. In turn, the expansion of this heated gas produces thrust out of the back of the cylinder which allows the boats to move through Newton's action / reaction principle (Newton's 3rd Law).
