Do It Yourself: Evolution: March 21st, 2002

Stephanie Royal, our project team leader and interim Director of Education at the Museum of Science and History crafted a comprehensive review of this year's program.

The Feedback:

The International Public Science Day project was a great experience for the museum and the school especially. It was a lot of fun to leave the museum and work inside the classroom for MOSH educators.

With this experience there are some things that could have been done differently. The major thing that we could have done differently was to focus on how to implement the energy ideas and concepts into real-world problems. The students were able to experience and learn more about energy and how important it is in our lives, but more time could have been spent on the issue of energy as a limited resouce. We focused more on making sure the students understood energy (for example conductors and measurement tools) rather than how to apply it to real life (for example how to more efficiently use solar power). Although we certainly did work on energy issues and some students did their projects on alternative energy sources.

The experience was a great one and I certainly hope that we will have the opportunity to participate again next year. We already have many things we are excitied about and can use this experience to build a greater project for next year!!

Response:

Indeed, the IPSD Project has been a boon (not to mention fun) for both the MOSH and for Rufus Payne Elementary. The changes to the program being suggested have been taken to heart by everyone on the team. With experience comes wisdom... and this site will continue to reflect the evolution of this project as we gain more input from the world at large.
