Joe Berg Society Service Page
The Joe Berg Society is an extracurricular enrichment program for
academically talented high school students in the Jacksonville area.
Its members pass a rigorous entrance exam in either Science or Humanities
for the honor of participating in stimulating lectures, seminars
and field trips in their chosen field. The Museum of Science and
History is pleased to host the Joe Berg society's meetings four
times per month during the school year at our facility. This page
is designed to inform Joe Berg Society members of MOSH's guidelines
for them.
In exchange for the organization's use of MOSH, Joe Berg Scholars
will be asked to perform 1 shift (3-4 hours) of volunteer service
at a museum event in both their Sophomore and Junior years. The
MOSH utilizes its volunteers for a variety of services to the Museum
and its patrons. Volunteers are expected to represent the MOSH as
if they were an employee. We realize that volunteers are giving
their time and effort without monetary compensation so we want to
make their experience enjoyable. Please note, however, that failure
to complete these hours by mid-May will result in termination from
the Joe Berg Society.
A few guidelines are in place to assist with that experience,
and they are as follows:
- If you sign-up for an event, you are committed to that event.
Please write it down.
- If you cannot attend an event for which you have sign-up, please
call or e-mail in advance. We realize occasions will occur which
are out of your control. All we ask is the courtesy of a phone
call.
- If you must call to cancel and receive the voice mail, please
leave your name, phone number, the event for which you signed
up, and that you are a member of Joe Berg. Please speak slowly
and clearly.
- Please dress appropriately. Unless a change is indicated below,
a polo shirt or button-down shirt and slacks for the men and a
nice blouse and pants for the women are acceptable. Jeans, short
shorts, T-shirts, and tank tops are unacceptable and you will
be sent home. Please wear nice shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are
not permitted.
- A sign-in book is located at the front desk. A section is labeled
"Joe Berg." Please print your name, date, hours worked,
and the event worked. If you fail to sign in correctly, you will
not receive credit.
- Please be punctual. We ask that you arrive ten minutes before
your scheduled time.
- BE ENTHUSIASTIC AND HAVE FUN!!
The following are upcoming Joe Berg Society volunteer opportunities.
To sign up for an event, please contact Heather Hamel at 396-7062
x229. You must sign-up in advance to complete your service for the
Joe Berg Society. This list is intended to aid volunteers in
signing-up for their shift and remembering the dates and times of
those shifts. An event will remain on the list until it has passed,
however, those marked "no shifts remaining" are full and
do not require any additional volunteers.
