MOSH is a great place to intern! College internships at MOSH offer college credit, valuable experience, and flexible schedules in a variety of subject areas. Interning gives you valuable experience and looks great on your resume. Sign up today and become part of a great team!

Internships are available to juniors, seniors or graduate students in the following areas:

History - As a history intern you will assist the history educator and the MOSH education department with a variety of tasks, including: school program research and development, volunteer training, history camp development, history demonstrations, some informal teaching, and more. Curatorial based internships can also be arranged on a case by case basis.

Natural Sciences - As a natural sciences intern you will help the naturalists and the MOSH education department with a variety of jobs, including: animal care and maintenance, program research and development, live animal programs, updating naturalist collections inventory, and more.

General Science - A science intern works with the science educator and the MOSH education department conducting school program research and development, volunteer training, science camp development, science demonstrations, some informal teaching, and more.

Other possible areas include: Graphic Design, Camp Educator, Advertising/Public Relations, Special Events planning, Art, and more. All internships are designed specifically for each student accepted so if you do not see your major listed, it might still be possible to design an internship that is right for you.

All college interns should posses some educational background in the area for which they are applying and a willingness to learn new things, work with people of all ages (especially children), and talk in front of groups. Research and computer skills are a plus. College internships are unpaid and accepted when associated with college credit only. MOSH accepts one intern, per job area, per semester.

To apply for a college internship, please include the following:

  • College Intern Application (downloadable form)
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member outlining why you should be considered for an internship at MOSH. This letter or another from your advisor should verify that the internship is for college credit and detail the information you should be obtaining from your experience with MOSH.
  • A resume and a letter expressing you interest in a college internship and how you expect to benefit from the program. The proposed beginning and ending dates of the internship should also be included in this letter.
  • A college transcript

College Internship Guidelines

College internships are accepted when associated with college credit only. Students must submit the College Intern Application form with all accompanying documentation for review to be eligible for consideration into the internship program. The MOSH accepts a maximum of two interns per department during a semester. If the current semester period is filled, applicants will be reviewed for the following semester period. Students will be contacted for an interview upon receipt of all information. All information must be submitted or the student will not be considered for an internship.

If a student is selected for an internship, a letter on school letterhead must be submitted stating that the school assumes all insurance liability for the student while interning at MOSH. Work at MOSH cannot begin until this letter is received.

As an intern at MOSH, the student is responsible for the following:

  • Provide a preferred work schedule to be reviewed and refined with the appropriate department head.
  • Log hours worked, including library and internet research time.
  • Design a research project or other necessary assignments with the appropriate department head.
  • Maintain a journal of tasks performed, projects accomplished and general thoughts about the intern program.
  • Provide any materials required by the university that must be completed by MOSH staff members (i.e. evaluation forms, grading materials, etc.)
  • Provide supervisors with completed research papers, bibliographies and/or projects.

The Museum of Science and History will in return:

  • Appoint a student supervisor.
  • Schedule work hours based on student's availability.
  • Provide access to specific work area.
  • Guide student to museum resources and contacts.
  • Provide a contract detailing job description, time commitment, and museum policies and expectations.
  • Schedule weekly meeting to give feedback and discuss performance.
  • Grade/Evaluate student.
  • Give a letter of recommendation upon successful completion of internship.
